Mission to the Top
The theme for Northwest Elementary character education program is "Mission to the Top". The theme is representative of the great challenges facing mountain climbers. The way to the top can be full of trials and tribulations but if they stick to the task and are responsible in their decisions the ultimate goal is to complete the climb and arrive safely at the top of the mountain.
Northwest wants their students to take this same attitude in making responsible decisions about academics and behavior during each school year. These kinds of decisions will help the students and the dedicated staff at Northwest successful.
Each month a character trait is celebrated with in each classroom and throughout the building. One student from each class that most exemplifies that trait is selected by their teacher to be that months Tiger Cub. Each cub receives a nap sack with the program theme painted across the back. Other students demonstrating the monthly trait are also recognized by being awarded a "Climbing with Character" award. Students that do something extraordinary like turning in lost money or items are recognized with our "Caught in the Act Backpacker" award.
At the end of the school year students that have accumulated the most awards are recognized as the grade level "Tiger Cub" of the year and receive a beautiful back pack with our theme " Mission to the Top" embroidered across the back.
Tiger Cub Dates
Northwest participates in the Accelerated Reader program to encourage student readers. Pre-3rd grade students are given four 6-9 week goals that can be accomplished through a number of books read or a total of points accumulated through a mutual goal.
Accelerated Reader Theme
Northwest's Accelerated Reader theme for 2016-2017 is Mine Craft. Students will be recognized for each station and location they meet. Mine Craft icons will be placed on bulletin boards outside each classroom.
Station points are accumulated by test points or books read depending on your grade. Students making their goals will celebrate on the designated dates with a culminating assembly and celebration at years end. Top readers per grade level will be recognized at each Tiger Cub assembly and the top readers for the year will be recognized during the AR assembly in May. The date of that assembly will be determined by the number of snow days we make up in May.
